Eliminate Allergies Technique (E.A.T.)
While the majority of allergy treatments for foods involve restricting foods, the Eliminate Allergy Technique (EAT) allows you to eat. There are 2 definitions of allergies often used: one, the narrow definition states that an allergy is an inappropriate immune response to an allergen, which could apply to anything from ragweed to nuts. Second, the broad definition of an allergy is an inappropriate functional response to an allergen causing fatigue, headaches, joint pain or abdominal discomfort. The Eliminate Allergy Technique addresses both definitions and eliminates allergies. Whether you do or do not have the typical “allergy” symptoms like a runny nose, itchy red watery eyes, coughing and wheezing, the EAT treatments will also help you to properly absorb vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and sugars. Without proper absorption it is impossible to achieve optimal health. Unfortunately, many people taking supplements for iron, vitamin D or B12 deficiencies, as an example, may not see significant improvements because the problem truly lies in their ability to absorb the nutrient properly. There is no benefit if you cannot absorb it. By improving your absorption, food and environmental sensitivities can be effectively eliminated with EAT treatments. For example, vitamin A is crucial to mucous membranes. Without proper absorption your cells cannot defend themselves against airborne irritants, foods, microorganisms and chemicals. An EAT treatment for vitamin A will therefore strengthen the integrity of your cells to defend and protect themselves against external irritants, no longer triggering an immune response. Anyone suffering from symptoms of headaches, fatigue, bloating, gas, heartburn, arthritis, asthma or eczema are more likely to have food sensitivities including grains (wheat and gluten), dairy, nuts, corn, coffee, sugar, food additives, chocolate and alcohol.
How was EATs Discovered?
EAT is an enhancement of a treatment developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad in 1983. She grew up with severe allergic symptoms including juvenile arthritis, eczema, indigestion, asthma and chronic fatigue. Her condition initially led to the study of nursing, where the common medical treatment was to avoid reaction causing foods and to take antihistamines or other pharmaceuticals. Dr. Nambudripad appeared to react to everything she consumed. She even reacted to all medications, except for Aspirin which she often used to make it through the day. The best treatment was to avoid more and more food. Unsatisfied, Dr. Nambudripad decided to study Chiropractic Medicine where she learned about Applied Kinesiology (muscle testing) and its application to food allergies. After comprehensive testing, it was concluded that she could only tolerate white rice and broccoli. The pain and symptoms subsided when her diet was limited to only these two foods. Dr. Nambudripad was able to maintain this diet for over 3 years! While studying acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, she found that acupuncture relieved symptoms caused by consuming an allergic food. The relief, unfortunately, was never permanent. One day while making dinner for her family she absent-mindedly ate a carrot, immediately bringing on symptoms of severe exhaustion. Her husband, an acupuncturist, gave her an acupuncture treatment right there on the kitchen table. After falling asleep she awoke feeling great and interestingly now able to tolerate carrots! This had never happened before. So what was different? During this treatment, a piece of carrot had been stuck to her arm. Dr. Nambudripad immediately started experimenting with holding onto various foods, vitamins, and minerals while receiving the acupuncture treatment. The knowledge she attained became the foundation of NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) and ultimately the adaptation of EAT. NaturoMedic.com’s EAT differs from Nambudripad’s NAET because we utilize homeopathics instead of requiring a 24-hour avoidance period of the food or nutrient. We also teach a specific breathing technique to increase the treatment’s effectiveness.
How do EATs Work?
EATs target the body’s Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The ANS helps your body function on autopilot so you do not have to think about things such as breathing, regulating your blood pressure and digesting food. The ANS has two parts: the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is the body’s accelerator; it speeds everything up. Breathing, blood flow to the muscles and heart rate all increase with sympathetic stimulation. It is commonly known as the “fight or flight” response directing you to run from (flight) or deal with (fight) a threat to your survival. The parasympathetic nervous system puts on the brakes. It slows everything down and allows your body to repair itself and digest food. Normally there is a balance between the two. During the treatment, we use alternating breathing patterns to stimulate both parts of the ANS. Deep breathing initiates the parasympathetic system and panting the sympathetic. We simultaneously apply pressure to acupuncture points on your back that correlate to your organs, known as the back shu points. These points run on either side of the spine, where all the nerves of the ANS leave the spine cord. By combining acupressure and breathing, we can reset the ANS, decrease allergies, promote absorption and encourage assimilation of nutrients for healing.
How do we know what to treat?
If necessary, blood work can be performed by your Allergist (or by NaturoMedic.com) to determine the foods that provoke an immune response or we can employ muscle testing. We use muscle testing to determine functional and energetic reactions to nutrients, foods or other allergens that the body cannot absorb or tolerate. Muscle testing assesses a functional response and not necessarily an immune response because we measure subtle frequencies of electromagnetic fields (EMF) in your body via your ANS. A weak muscle response indicates your body’s ANS is rejecting or repelling the EMF of the substance you are holding. A strong muscle response indicates your body’s ANS is accepting or attracting the EMF of the substance you are holding. In this way we can functionally assess which substances your body is reacting to. For example, while holding a vial of eggs, your body may give a strong muscle response suggesting that you are accepting of eggs. Alternatively, a weak muscle response indicates that your body is essentially having a negative functional reaction to eggs. At NaturoMedic.com, we implement the EAT technique to treat you for the substance, eventually leading to the desired strong muscle response thereby promoting absorption and encouraging assimilation of nutrients for healing.
What improvements will I see after getting EATs?
Most people experience slow incremental changes as the treatments progress. You might notice increased colour in the face, reduction of dark circles under the eyes, or stronger healthier nails and hair. We have also witnessed some dramatic changes. A seven year old boy presented with a severe allergy to peanuts, developing swelling and closing of the throat (anaphylaxis) when coming into contact with peanuts. After a series of EAT treatments, he was found to be completely clear of the allergy upon retesting at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Another woman attended a lecture on EATs and allergies where Dr. Prytula demonstrated a treatment on eggs for her. She neglected to mention that she had anaphylactic reactions to eggs and went home to suffer greatly for the next few days as her body processed the treatment. She later reported to Dr. Prytula that, to her delight, she could now eat eggs without a problem and her overall health had greatly improved! After a series of EAT treatments, one gentleman suffering from shellfish anaphylaxis unknowingly ate some shellfish in a sauce without realizing it until finishing the meal. We have witnessed the resolution of many anaphylactic allergic conditions due to the EAT treatment.
Possible EAT Reactions
Is there a “normal” reaction after a successful EAT treatment? Some patients do not experience any change following their first EAT treatment. A few find the change to be very subtle and others may experience one or more symptoms from the list below. Anything you notice, other than being pain-free, with an overall sense of well-being mentally and physically, is a reaction. The intensity of the reaction(s) depends on many factors, such as the duration of the illness, the intensity of the illness and the status of the immune system. In most cases, if a reaction occurs, it will only last for a short period of time.
Possible Short-term Physical Reactions
- High/low energy, general body aches, temperature variations, extreme fatigue, sleepiness, insomnia, restlessness
- Tingling, twitching or pinprick sensation anywhere in the body, shooting to dull pain
- Headaches, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, sensations of hair like particles in the eye and numbness, choking, throat constriction
- Sneezing, coughing, tearing, post nasal drip, sensation of the dust-like particles in the lungs
- Increased blood pressure, palpitation, tightness in the chest, cardiac arrhythmia, decreased or increased heart rates, paroxysmal tachycardia, sudden venous congestion or varicose vein
- Abdominal bloating, nausea, belching, hiccups, hyperacidity, diarrhea, constipation
- Excessive or low libido
- A reoccurrence of old symptoms
Possible Short-term Emotional Reactions
- Anxiety, nervousness, depression, mood swings, fear, crying spells, butterfly sensation in the stomach, obsession, exacerbation of suicidal thoughts, laughing spells
- Cravings: salt, sugar, spices, sour things, coffee, popcorn, sweet smells (flower or perfumes), chemical smell (bleach), smell of sweat, etc.
Please note any symptoms you experience.
Emotional Allergy and/or Sensitivity
The origin of physical symptoms can often be traced back to an unresolved emotional trauma. For example, one patient’s EAT treatments were continuously not holding. Upon investigation it was discovered that growing up her parents would have an intense argument at each meal. After an MRT session to resolve the emotional trauma around eating in a safe environment, the EAT treatments held.
Following a successful treatment for an allergen, the physical and nutritional allergy or sensitivity may never return. However the emotional allergy or sensitivity can return if you are not careful to avoid unpleasant things while eating or cooking. It is very important to respect food preparation and consumption for better assimilation of the nutrients and to avoid the recurrence of emotional allergies or sensitivities.
Develop Good Eating Habits and Prevent Emotional Blockages
Avoid eating when under stress and always try to have pleasant thoughts while eating. Positive thoughts will help with nutrient absorption; so enjoy your food. You can play your favorite music while you eat.
Many cultures bless their food before they eat, giving one a chance to clear the mind of all troubled emotions. Calming the mind before you eat helps to avoid digestive difficulties. Try to eat with people who share positive thoughts and make eating a pleasant event.
Diet: EAT patients are encouraged to eat non-allergic and non-sensitive food whenever possible and drink 5-8 glasses of clear, filtered water a day.
Exercise: Regular exercise is very important to the distribution of nutrients evenly in the body and stimulates the proper flow of energy along acupuncture meridians. Begin very slowly if you are very sick or have not exercised recently. It is also advisable to drink a large glass of water after exercising to help eliminate the toxins produced from the workout.
To EAT or Not To EAT? – That is the Question
EAT treatments may appear simple but they have a large impact. Energetic changes along the various meridians are taking place during and after the treatments. Food can help replenish your energy, so fasting is not recommended.
Eating Refined Food
Refined foods should be avoided. Eat more non-allergenic complex carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables. In the initial stage, cook food well if it is hard to digest. If you are not a vegetarian, eat unprocessed lean meats. Avoid excess fat consumption, as these types of foods will slow down the energy circulation through the energy meridians.
Food Craving During Treatment
Most of the time, when you are treated for an allergen sensitivity with EAT, you may experience an unusual craving for that particular item or you may experience withdrawal symptoms. The reason for this is because the long-term allergy or sensitivity has created a huge deficiency of essential nutrients. The brain is simply demanding more essential nutrients for the body.
